Ainsdale sits between Southport and Formby along the coast - 10 minutes from the workshop via the A565. It's mostly 1930s semis, some inter-war detached homes, and newer estate developments to the east near the railway. I've done dozens of front garden gates along Liverpool Road and Sandon Road, plenty of alcove cupboards in the older properties, and regular fitted-wardrobe work in the semis.
Ainsdale's 1930s semis - the joinery sweet spot
The vast majority of Ainsdale housing is 1930s semi-detached stock, and these are houses I know inside out. Standard original skirting is 6-inch ogee, doors are 4-panel solid softwood, alcoves either side of the chimney breast are around 95-110cm wide, and the master bedroom typically has a chimney breast giving you two useable alcoves. These are genuinely great houses for bespoke joinery - the alcoves take fitted cupboards beautifully, the high ceilings mean wardrobes can go full-height without looking oppressive, and the solid-construction walls take fixings well.
Coastal weathering and timber choices
Ainsdale sits right on the coast and gets hit with the same salt spray as Formby. For external work - gates, fences, porches, decking - I always recommend either oak or pressure-treated softwood with a high-grade UV finish. Red-wood fence panels last about 6-8 years in this environment if properly treated; gone a bit brittle before then is usually a sign the finish has failed rather than the timber itself.
Popular Ainsdale jobs
By far the most common Ainsdale enquiries are: front garden gates (red-wood, concrete-set posts, galvanised fittings - a day's work, £380-£450 all in), alcove cupboards either side of the chimney breast (shaker-style doors, painted finish, typically £900-£1,200 per pair), and full-height fitted wardrobes in the 1930s master bedrooms where the chimney-breast recesses make ready-made full-depth wardrobe runs.
