Churchtown is the old heart of Southport - the conservation area around Botanic Gardens and the original village streets. Georgian and Victorian cottages sit alongside detached period houses, with pockets of 1920s infill. Period joinery work is the order of the day: sash windows, solid doors, staircase restoration, matched skirting. A beautiful place to work.
Churchtown's heritage and joinery demands
Churchtown village is one of the oldest settlements in Southport - the parish of North Meols predates the seaside town by centuries. That means some of the cottages around St Cuthbert's Church and Botanic Gardens are genuinely old (some 18th century) and need a joiner who understands traditional construction: pegged joints, oak framing, hand-planed surfaces rather than machine finishes. For the Victorian and Edwardian infill on Meols Cop Road and Preston New Road, work is closer to what I do in Birkdale - matched profiles and period-appropriate materials.
Botanic Gardens conservation area
Much of central Churchtown is in a conservation area, and there are several Grade II listed cottages. Restoration work here needs the right approach: sash windows restored not replaced, solid doors kept rather than swapped out, original skirting and architraves preserved where at all possible. I work closely with conservation officers on Churchtown jobs and can help with listed building consent where needed.
Popular Churchtown projects
Typical Churchtown enquiries: sash window overhaul (draughty originals getting a full rebuild - splice repairs, draught-proofing, new sash cords - typically £550-£950 per window), solid pitch-pine door restoration and rehanging, staircase spindle replacement in 1920s semis, matched skirting reinstatement in period cottages, and bespoke alcove joinery that works around original beams and fireplaces.
