Crosby - especially Blundellsands and Waterloo - has beautiful Victorian villas and Edwardian semis. It's about 25 minutes south of Southport via the A565, and I take on larger, planned projects there: full staircase restorations, bespoke master wardrobes, sash window overhauls. For smaller jobs I try to pair up two or three enquiries on the same day to keep travel time efficient.
Why I love working in Crosby
Blundellsands is an area of serious Victorian architecture - big detached villas, wide avenues, original period features still intact in many properties. The Edwardian semis around Mersey Road and Warren Road are similarly lovely. The joinery work here is often restoration-led: bringing an original staircase back from 80 years of neglect, restoring sash windows, reinstating matched skirting and architraves where previous owners have stripped them out.
Projects in Crosby tend to be larger and more considered - homeowners there are typically doing proper restorations rather than quick flips, and the finished work lasts.
Pairing jobs for travel efficiency
Because Crosby is a 25-minute drive each way, I try to group site visits and smaller jobs together where possible. If you're getting a quote for a £350 door-hanging job, I'll often suggest a date when I'm already working in Blundellsands on a larger project - that way there's no travel surcharge and you get the full survey time. For bigger installations (staircase restoration, full-house internal doors, garden rooms) the travel isn't a factor because I'm on site for days or weeks anyway.
Common Crosby projects
Typical jobs: full staircase restoration in Victorian villas (spindle replacement, tread re-fixing, newel post repair, handrail splicing - typically £2,500-£5,500); bespoke alcove cupboards and bookcases in period living rooms; walk-in master wardrobes in the larger Edwardian bedrooms; and sash window overhauls where the originals have been neglected.
